iPod and iPhone: TV out support

The following devices have support for TV out:
  • iPod touch
  • iPod touch (2nd generation)
  • iPod touch (Late 2009)
  • iPhone (software version 1.1.1 or later required)
  • iPhone 3G
  • iPhone 3GS
  • iPod nano (3rd generation)
  • iPod nano (4th generation)
  • iPod nano (5th generation)
  • iPod classic
  • iPod (5th generation)
  • iPod with color display (iPod photo)
Note: Other iPod models may support viewing of photos or slideshows on the iPod display but do not support TV out.

The following docks support TV out when used with an iPod model or iPhone that supports TV out:
  • Apple Universal Dock (requires either the Apple Composite AV Cable or the Apple Component AV Cable - will not work with the iPod AV Cable). Search the store for part number MB125G.
  • iPod Universal Dock or iPod with color display Dock (iPod photo Dock)
Important: The iPhone dock does not support TV out.

iPod models that support TV out can support viewing on a television in several different ways. Use the tables below to see which cables and docks can be used with each iPod model. Check the documentation that came with the cable or iPod for information on how to connect and enable TV out.

Cable compatibility

All you need to get TV out is a compatible iPod or iPhone and the correct cable. If your device works with the component and composite cables, then the choice depends on the TV(s) you will be connecting to.

iPod, Cable, and Dock compatibility

A dock can be a welcome addition if you're going to keep your cables connected to the TV. The Apple Universal Dock includes an Apple Remote so you can pause and adjust the volume from a distance. The docks and cables are sold separately.

Summary

Genius Mixes are preselected compilations of songs from your iTunes library that can be synced to your iPhone, iPod touch, iPod classic 160GB (Late 2009), or iPod nano (5th generation) when you enable Genius in iTunes. To learn more about Genius you can see this article, or open iTunes and choose Help > iTunes Help. Then type "Genius" or "Genius Mixes."

To sync Genius Mixes from iTunes to your iPhone, iPod touch, iPod classic 160GB (Late 2009), or iPod nano (5th generation), you can either:
1. Sync your entire iTunes music library to the device, including all playlists, artists, genres, Genius playlists, and Genius Mixes*
or
2. Sync selected playlists, artists, and genres, as well as selected Genius playlists and Genius Mixes
To sync selected Genius playlists and Genius Mixes to your device:
  1. In iTunes, select your device in the device list and click the Music tab.
  2. Check Sync Music, and then choose "Selected playlists, artists, and genres."
  3. Under Playlists, select the Genius playlists and Genius Mixes you want.
  4. Click Apply.

Notes:
  • Genius Mixes can only be synced automatically, so you won't be able to add Genius Mixes to your device if "Sync only checked songs and videos" is checked in the iTunes Summary pane.
  • If you select any Genius Mixes to sync with your device, iTunes may select and sync additional songs from your library that you didn’t select.
  • If you choose to sync your entire music library, iTunes will sync all your Genius playlists and Genius Mixes to the device.
